Owerri, Nigeria, November 2015: Last week, an ordinary day suddenly turned extraordinary in Government Secondary School, Owerri, as a visit from beverage giant Coca-Cola Nigeria, transformed students of the school into musical stars, through its Coke Studio Africa.

There was so much excitement in Government Secondary School, Owerri, as the Coke Studio Bus drove into the school premises. So many students indicated their willingness to get opportunity to have their song recorded in the mobile studio. Eventually, 10 students were selected from senior secondary school (SSS) 1 to senior secondary school (SSS) 3 respectively, for auditioning.

After a transparent audition process, the best 4 talented students were selected to enter the Coke Studio Bus, where they got a session with the producer, who took the young stars through a grinding, yet fun time in the studio.

The Coke Studio producer mixed their beats, and the students expressed how pleased they were after the songs were completed. They were stunned as they listened to their various songs.

One of the students, Onyegbule Chukwuka said, “I could not even believe it was my voice that was playing, after the recording. It is a beautiful experience, and it makes me want to get better at whatever I do. The producer made my music better that means every other thing I do can get better.”

Some of the teachers who were in the studio to watch and listen to the songs recorded by their students also expressed their joy and showered praise on Coca-Cola.

Speaking on the great initiative by Coca-Cola Nigeria, the Vice Principal Administrative of Government Secondary School, Owerri, Mr. Ibekwe Benjamin stated, “This is a noble venture from Coca-Cola, and the students are excited that a multinational company of their magnitude can come to help them groom their talents. This is new to them, and it is a laudable idea.”

Mr Benjamin further stated that “this will definitely spur the students to action as they now know that their hidden talents can be located anywhere. I believe this is going to bring out the best in them. They will want to excel and do what they know well; those who are inclined to art, science, music and various endeavours of life and it will bring the best of our students, academically, socially and even morally.

The principal also commended Coca-Cola’s unrelenting effort to bring out the best in Nigerian youths. His words, “a very big kudos to Coca-Cola, for a highly reputable company in the society like them to put in efforts to develop the educational sector is incredible”.

The Coke Studio school visits, is an initiative by Coca-Cola to offer up to 500,000 Nigerian teens in secondary schools with an opportunity to showcase and highlight their talent with a state-of-the-art Coke Studio bus which is fully equipped with a digital music production facility; with professional mixing console, recording microphones, state- of-the-art audio interface and mic pre-amp.
