Art Week Johannesburg hosted a spectacular Contour Bottle exhibition in a gallery space in Maboneng this past weekend. Journalists and art lovers eagerly visited the exhibition that showcased the work of South and Southern Africa artists- Mbongeni Buthelezi, Tony Gum, Simon Parkin and Namibian Kabelo Kim Modise - who have all been inspired by the iconic contour bottle shape. The artistic styles ranged from photography to abstract art, to the impressive and original work of Mbongeni Buthelezi who uses the melted Coca-Cola plastic wrap as his paint.
“The Coca-Cola contour bottle has been a muse to designers and artists such as Andy Warhol, Clive Barker and Marc Jacobs. It is exciting to see how it continues to inspire artists here in our continent as well,” said Zipporah Maubane, as she welcomed media to the opening of the exhibition. Hilton Lawler added, ‘Celebrations of this iconic shape began earlier this year in Cape Town with an Art Tour of magnificent contour bottle-inspired artworks by world reknowned artists . Today we are making it possible for local artists to showcase their work and we are delighted the response from the public has been this great.’ Young up and coming artist Tony Gum said, ‘This is great for the Arts, Coca-Cola is part of our communities and its wonderful to see the brand embracing Art – which is the soul of our communities.’
