The 2015 Highway Africa Conference, the continent’s most anticipated gathering of journalists, editors and academics, kicked off the first weekend of September at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. Journalists from across Africa participated in short courses and workshops to up-skill themselves and build capacity to report accurately on issues such as health, nutrition and the environment. Coca-Cola took the opportunity to engage with journalists by sponsoring a training session by Dr. Lian Steenkap, a registered dietician, on Nutrition Science: Separating Hype from Scientific Research. Knowing that media influences health and nutritional perceptions among the public, journalists were taken through various topics in nutrition research such as research methodologies, research validity and reliability, peer review system, ethical clearance and conflict of interest. Commenting after the session, journalist Lucas Molefe said, “What we see is that there is a lot of research information available especially on the internet, everybody knows a bit about nutrition. This workshop has enabled me to understand fully what to look out for when reporting on nutrition research especially from a credibility and validity point of view”.
