Speaking at the awards ceremony at a local hotel, Coca-Cola Senior Operations Manager, Atkins Chimhandamba said that Coca-Cola remains committed to supporting local artists.
“This programme is meant to reward our local musicians, as well as provide them with avenues to exhibit their talents. The music awards is one of the many ways in which the Coca-Cola Zimbabwe Company and its bottling partners, namely Delta Beverages, Schweppes Zimbabwe and Mutare bottling company ploughs back to the Zimbabwean community.
“Coca-Cola’s relationship with entertainment industry is well documented. The Coca-Cola Radio Zimbabwe Top 20 sponsorship started in 1980 while Coke on the Beat TV programme commenced in 1984. It may have skipped some seasons but it’s still with us.
Until now, we continue to give back through such initiatives as the Coca-Cola weekly Top 20 on Zimbabwe’s leading national radio Station. Radio Zimbabwe. The Top 20 culminates into the annual Coca Cola top 50 awards while the TV awards feed out of the top television weekly presentation, Coke on the Beat. Coke Studio is another new initiative which has seen local Musicians benefiting in this Africa- wide show. So far Oliver Mtukudzi, Amara Brown and Man Soldier have featured in the first two episodes amongst other African musicians,” said Vee Chibanda.
The winners you see here today, were not nominated by the Coca-Cola system, neither by music experts nor by ZBC presenters or any other party. The results you are seeing today have been amassed from the popular votes of viewers and listeners across the length and breadth of Zimbabwe. The votes came from as far as Beitbridge, Chiredzi, Hwange, Victoria Falls, Nyamapanda, Chipinge, Kariba, Karoi, Bulawayo, and Mutoko and may other distant places as evidenced by some who are here, present with us, after they correctly predicted the top 5 charts in their correct order.
Ladies and Gentleman, the fact that a total of 23 people correctly predicted the top five charts, in their order is a massive indication that our listeners, from teens to the old, religiously follow the Coca-Cola top 20 and Top 50. Imagine a total 3 420 correctly predicted the number one song on Radio Zimbabwe, that is Madam Boss.
I am excited to learn that one of the winners this year, Muranganwa Svosve, is a previous winner in the predictions contest. He also won in 2014. He won a radio in 2014. This time he won a TV. I see him completing his living room property needs because of drinking Coca-Cola and listening to radio Zimbabwe. The cumulative votes that a song receives during the Top 20 show every Saturday are tallied with votes that a listeners send specifically for their favourite songs at the end of the year.
“Although we had planned to reward 15 fans for correctly predicting the top 5 songs or videos, our hearts were so touched as the Coca-Cola System by the level of engagement, loyalty, passion and support from our fans such that we just decided to reward all the 23 who got the predictions correctly,” Said Vee Chibanda.
The Coca-Cola- ZBC Top 50 music and Video awards are an annual music ceremony in which viewers and listeners vote for their favorite songs which would have done well during the course of the year.
Unlike other music award ceremonies where panels of experts are responsible for choosing winners, this one is unique as it belongs to the viewers and listeners. Fans are empowered to select songs and videos of their choice through a voting mobile phone SMS platform.
There was overwhelming participation in 2016, with close to a million votes being received for the Coca-Cola Radio Zimbabwe Top 50.
