Our Position

  • 5by20 is The Coca-Cola Company’s ambitious global initiative to enable the economic empowerment of 5 million women entrepreneurs across our value chain by 2020. Specifically, that means the small businesses – from fruit farmers to retailers to artisans – the Company works with in over 200 countries around the world.

  • We believe there is no better investment than women to spur economic growth and foster sustainable development. Women are pillars of the communities we serve and pillars of our business. Women are critical to our business success and to our 2020 Vision.

  • We cannot reach this ambitious goal alone. It requires collaboration across sectors, bringing together business, government and civil society.

Our Strategies

  • Through 5by20, we are developing and implementing programs that enable women entrepreneurs to break down the barriers they face. These programs include business skills training courses, access to financial services and access to support networks of peers or mentors.

  • We are working with our partners to build on best-practices in the Coca-Cola business system worldwide and on the valuable insights and programs our partners bring to the table, encouraging innovation, scale-up and replication.

  • Our signature global partner is UN Women. This partnership leverages UN Women’s reach and influence as a leader in promoting gender equality and economic empowerment while also leveraging the broad global reach of Coca-Cola’s value chain and its extensive business expertise. This $4 million partnership will reach more than 40,000 women in Egypt, Brazil and South Africa over the next three years, providing valuable insights on sustainable project models that can be scaled up worldwide.

  • We are also proud to collaborate with TechnoServe, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, International Finance Corporation and others around the world.

  • By harnessing the unique scale and reach of the global Coca-Cola system in more than 200 markets worldwide, 5by20 can give millions of women opportunities to build their businesses, support their families, build their communities and inspire more to do the same.

Our Progress

  • We are making strong progress. By the end of 2012, approximately 300,000 women were impacted in total through the initiative.

  • We are working diligently to test, learn and scale the programs that work. We believe this is the best approach to ensure a lasting legacy that is sustainable.

  • There are 5by20 programs enabling women in more than 20 countries around the world including Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Egypt, Ethiopia, Haiti, India, Liberia, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, the Philippines, South Africa and Thailand.

  • In June 2011, Coca-Cola South Africa (CCSA) graduated its first 40 women entrepreneurs through the pilot Women Empowerment programme in Johannesburg. Through classroom and field training the women learned valuable skills in technology, finance, networking and business basics.

  • In the years ahead, we expect to reach every region of the globe as 5by20 grows exponentially.

  • In March 2013, The Coca-Cola Company was recognized with the 2013 Catalyst award acknowledging the Company’s exceptional initiatives that expand opportunities for women in business.
