By advancing smart technology, we believe performance and sustainability can go hand-in-hand to make a world of difference for consumers and the environment. Our latest breakthrough innovation is the introduction of PlantBottle™ packaging – the first-ever recyclable PET plastic beverage bottle made from renewable plant-based materials. PlantBottle™ packaging looks, functions and recycles just like traditional PET plastic but does so with a lower material carbon footprint.
In 2009, we introduced the world to our breakthrough PlantBottle™ package made with up to 30 percent renewable materials from plants. PlantBottle™ packaging is made by converting natural sugars found in plants into the ingredients for making PET plastic. PlantBottle™ packaging has the same performance as other PET bottles. PlantBottle™ packaging is fully recyclable in the existing community recycling programs and can be used back into new bottles or for the wide variety of other products made from recycled PET.
We have distributed more than 5 billion PlantBottle™ packages in more than 25 countries worldwide. By 2020, we plan to use PlantBottle™ packaging for all of our PET plastic bottles.
Plants used in PlantBottle™ packaging are specifically selected based on sustainability criteria to ensure that they do not compete with food crops and are capable of delivering improved environmental and social performance.
PlantBottle™ packaging reduces dependence on fossil fuels compared with traditional PET plastic. Our use of PlantBottle™ packaging since launch has eliminated the equivalent of more than 140,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions from our PET plastic bottles. This is equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide emitted from burning more than 328,000 barrels of oil.
PlantBottle™ packaging has received global recognition including the 2010 DuPont Award for Packaging Innovation, 2011 Edison Award for Best New Product, Wal-Mart’s 2011 Sustainable Packaging Award, 2011 Greener Package Award, McDonald’s 2012 Global Best of Sustainable Supply Report (featured) and 2013 European CSR Award (CCE).
In South Africa Valpre has a strong link with sustainable packaging based on its multi-pronged approach to ensuring the reduction of its carbon foot print. Valpre is the first South African Coca- Cola product to be packed in the PlantBottle™ which is made up to 30 % plant based materials.
In December 2011, our packaging innovation team announced partnerships with three biotechnology companies. The partnership will focus on developing a sustainable and commercially viable solution for the next generation PlantBottle™ package that is fully recyclable and made entirely from plant-based materials.
In July 2013, we announced a goal to responsibly source material for PlantBottle™ packaging which will enable the Company to meet its goal to use up to 30 percent plant-based material for all our PET plastic bottles by 2020.
Coca-Colawill work with WWF to assess the environmental and social performance of plant-based materials for potential use in its PlantBottle™ packaging.
